New Zealand National Head Coach – Job Description
Position Title: National Head Coach
Organisation: Baseball New Zealand

Reports To: Performance and Pathway Manager / CEO
Position Overview
The National Head Coach is responsible for leading the strategic development, preparation, and performance of New Zealand’s National Team on the international stage. This role oversees all aspects of the high-performance program, ensuring athletes and staff are supported, prepared, and developed to compete successfully at regional and world events. The Head Coach will set the technical and cultural standards for the program while building strong pathways and alignment across the national system.

Key Responsibilities

High Performance Leadership
  • Lead the planning, preparation, and performance of the National Team for all international competitions.
  • Develop and implement annual high-performance plans, training programs, and performance benchmarks.
Athlete Development
  • Identify, select, and develop athletes for the National Team and wider high-performance pathway.
  • Oversee long-term athlete development models, ensuring alignment with national development philosophies.
  • Provide individual performance feedback, development plans, and ongoing athlete monitoring.
Technical & Tactical Coaching
  • Maintain a modern coaching philosophy informed by global trends and best practices.
Staff & Program Management
  • Recruit, lead, and mentor assistant coaches, support staff, and performance personnel.
Culture & Communication
  • Build a positive, inclusive, and accountable team culture rooted in respect, effort, and national pride.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, staff, families, clubs, and regional associations.
  • Represent the national program professionally in media, public events, and stakeholder engagements.
Pathway & Community Engagement
  • Collaborate with regional coaches and development staff to strengthen the national talent pathway.
  • Deliver coach education sessions, workshops, and mentoring to uplift nationwide coaching capability.
  • Support national development initiatives and talent ID events.

Job Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Significant coaching experience at elite, national, or international level.
  • Proven track record in developing high-performance athletes and teams.
  • Strong understanding of international competition standards and trends.
  • Demonstrated success in performance planning, team selection, and in-game management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background working with youth, senior, or professional athletes in structured performance pathways.
Personal Attributes
  • Ability to inspire athletes, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to continuous learning, innovation, and international best practice.
Other Requirements
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
  • Valid driver’s license (or ability to obtain one promptly).

We’re looking for volunteers with a wide variety of skills and experience to shape our operations for athletes, officials and fans. Our goal is to create a volunteer-centric program that encompasses capable, committed and connected volunteers, who have a passion for helping young athletes achieve their goals.

Baseball New Zealand requires assistance in all facets of the game, umpires, scorers, tournament officials, administrators, sponsorship specialists and anyone who just wants to be part of the team working to make baseball the most popular summer sport in New Zealand.
