Starting Out

Feel like starting out in baseball? If you have decided this is the game for you and you want to join a team or if you are still undecided and want to watch a game or try-out, the best place to start is your local club or association. You can find a club near you or contact your Regional Association or Baseball New Zealand for more information.

Starting out in baseball is easy, welcoming, and fun, no matter your age, skill level, or experience. Here’s what you need to know to take your first steps:

1. Find a Local Club

Visit the FIND A CLUB page or CONTACT US directly to find a club near you. Our network of clubs across the country run regular training sessions, games, and “Have a Go” days designed especially for new players.

2. Choose the Right Programme

Whether you’re a young beginner or a teen switching from another sport, there’s a programme to suit you:

  • T-Ball (ages 4–7): A fun introduction to the basics.
  • Rookie/Minors Baseball (ages 8–12): Builds core skills and understanding of the game.
  • Youth/Junior Baseball (ages 13–18): Competitive team play with ongoing development.
  • Adult Baseball: Social and competitive leagues for older players.

3. Gear Up

To get started, you usually only need comfortable sports clothing and a good attitude. Most clubs will provide gloves, bats, and helmets for beginners. As you progress, you may want to invest in your own gear, but it’s not essential from day one.

4. Register and Get Involved

Sign up with your local club and join training sessions. Many offer beginner-friendly environments with qualified coaches who will help you learn at your own pace.

5. Have Fun and Keep Learning

Baseball is a game of constant growth and teamwork. From the very first throw to your first game, you’ll build skills, make friends, and discover a sport that’s as rewarding as it is exciting.

Baseball is ready for you. Are you ready for baseball?
